During this strange time of isolation LGSC have got your back. We've asked some of our favourite girl gangs from across the world to let us know what is keeping them amused and entertained.
First up are the ladies from "Ladies Lit Squad", the UK's coolest book club letting us know their essential reading list.
If you liked Handmaid's Tale and Vox you'll love this novel about the not-so-distant future where surrogacy is taken to the next level. And women’s wombs are a commercial commodity. It's really not that farfetched, WE can totally imagine Amazon Prime selling babies next year....
This book is properly funny and properly nuts. The protagonist Cheryl Glickman works at a company that creates self-defence videos for women, and the owners unceremoniously foist their adult daughter Clee into the care of Cheryl with unexpected results. This book is so quirky and made us (actually) laugh out loud.
The Regulars poses the question ‘what would you do if you were more beautiful?’.
It follows three girlfriends navigating careers and relationships in NYC with a magical twist. We were hooked from page one and it’s a really interesting subject that plays on every girl’s deepest, darkest desires..
Henrietta Lacks was an African-American woman whose cancer cells were used to create an ‘immortal’ cell line for scientific experimentation. You could say that Henrietta is the most important woman in medical history as her cells have helped find cures for hundreds of diseases. So why do we know nothing about this woman? Why do her family still live in poverty while other people have made millions off of her biology? This book is a riveting look at science and race.
Elaine Welteroth is very very impressive. She was the youngest ever editor at Conde Nast, helming Teen Vogue through its most successful phase. This memoir details her childhood, growing up mixed race and how to rise to the top of your career.
The titular Eleanor is a self-contained, anti-social girl – when an incident forces her life open and introduces her back into the world. Each character is thoughtfully written and some of Eleanor’s comments will have you laughing out loud. Her sad past and some parts of the book will have you in tears though. Just an excellent, excellent book.
So that rounds up our pick from the Ladies Lit Squad!
